History, music, art, culture and a variety of other exciting things come together at the Cooktown Discovery Festival. Held from the 10th till the 13th of June this year, watch Cooktown come alive with a number of enriching and fun events held across the town.

A Sight for Sore Eyes

Places like Charlotte Street and its surrounding areas are seen in a light like never before with enchanting decor, national level performers, frolicking families and some wonderfully depicted historical events. You can also find a variety of games and activities such as carnival style rides, truck pull competitions, Billy cart racing and the renowned annual tug of war competition.

Delving into the Historical Past of Cooktown

The Discovery Festival highlights some of Cooktown’s richest history, honouring the distinctive day that Captain James Cook landed in Queensland, and the first ever contact shared by the indigenous Australians and Europeans.

While the festivities are a true wonder to be a part of, displays such as the re-enactment of Cook’s landing and the traditional ceremony are a great sight to see. Whether you are fascinated by the indigenous dance performances, strolling through the town, enjoying a carnival ride or discovering a new artist, this quaint festival isn’t one to miss.

Making Your Way Across Town

While the main sight is the costumed re-enactment of the landing of Captain James Cook and the followed meeting with the local Guugu Yimithirr people, the rest of the festival is spread across town. The best way to join in on all the celebrations is with a private car. A car hire from Cairns is not only inexpensive but also the most convenient way to get to Cooktown.

The festival will have many people flocking to the town, which means that the public transport is bound to be packed. Having the convenience of your own ride during this crowded time of year can make your trip to Cooktown more comfortable.

Make sure you grab yourself a good spot for events, such as the parade, by hiring a car and reaching the venue well in advance!
