Modern Australian cuisine is a distinctly multicultural affair, but there are still ways to experience something truly original to this continent. The use of indigenous flora and fauna in cooking lends a truly unique flavour to dishes and is certainly something you should experience. Here are our picks of the best places to try:

Ochre, Cairns

Situated on the boardwalk in Cairns, Ochre specialises in crafting foraged native ingredients into cuisine that is exciting and modern. Definitely one to try if you’re passing through Cairns.

Purple Goanna Café, Sydney

In the Sydney suburb of Redfern, you’ll find this unassuming café with a menu you won’t find anywhere else. Their big brekkie includes a roo steak and native spices – or for lunch, try some crocodile or barramundi on your burger. Even dessert is infused with indigenous flavours – their Lilly Pilly ice cream is heavenly and unique.

Orana, Adelaide

The Orana dining experience is one infused with Australiana – from the native timbers in the restaurant fitout to the glazed tableware made from Australian clays, this is a place to immerse yourself in a truly elegant Aussie meal. Their seasonal tasting menu has between eighteen and twenty courses, allowing you to experience the full gamut of flavours on offer.

Tukka, Brisbane

In Brisbane’s West End you’ll find iconic eatery Tukka, which serves a wide variety of Australian fauna and flora on the menu. Their degustation includes kangaroo, possum, crocodile, emu and a wide variety of Australian fruits, spices and herbs. They have a cookbook too so you can try their meals at home.

Tali Wiru, Uluru

This unique spot serves up amazing indigenous flavours at an open-air restaurant with stunning views of Uluru – it just doesn’t get any more Australian than that.
