Stretching from the Adelaide Hills totheBarossa Valley and beyond, South Australia’s wine regions are known throughout the world for their superb quality.

Sample a selection of each winery’s best varietals, then choose a couple of bottles to take away with you. Most wineries also offer you a menu of delectable food that pairs perfectly with the wines on hand. What’s more, you’ll be treated to some stunning views over the South Australian hills.

Although the wineries are brilliant all year long, the best time to visit is at the end of harvest, in April and May, when the weather is pleasant and the flavours at their most beautiful.

How to get there

A number of tour companies operate throughout the area, however you can also opt to drive your own way through the regions. Both options have their benefits, but a self-guided tour gives you the opportunity to explore the wineries at your own pace.

Where to visit

Many of South Australia’s wine districts are acclaimed for their award-winning red varietals. Langhorne Creek, Eden Valley and the Coonawarra region in particular are essential destinations for any red-lover.

If you prefer white, the Clare Valley is known for its Riesling, while Adelaide Hills wineries commonly boast some superb Chardonnays.

Learn as you go

It doesn’t matter if you’re a bona fide sommelier or if this is your first foray into wine tasting; staff at each winery will provide you the optimum experience. If you’re not quite sure what you’re doing, ask for guidance while you’re tasting. Each winery will be able to provide notes that describe each wine’s flavour profiles.
