Dubbo is a large, vibrant town north-west of Sydney and a fantastic place to visit for a great deal of variety. The city has a history dating back to 1818, though evidence of Indigenous habitation estimates 40,000 years of occupation. Its modern appeal provides attractions and activities to suit all tastes.
Spend the day at the popular Taronga Western Plains Zoo, where you can drive along the 6km circuit, stopping at enclosures and picnic spots along the way. The zoo houses over 350 species, many of which are endangered.
Head back in time with a visit to Dundullimal Homestead, built in 1840, or the Old Dubbo Gaol, which operated from 1847 to 1966. Here you can witness 19th Century architecture and artifacts, take a tour, or spend some time in solitary confinement.
When the Dubbo weather is accommodating, a turn about the Dubbo Regional Botanic Gardens will reveal several serene parks that make the perfect place to relax or enjoy a quiet picnic. The Shoyoen Garden is particularly popular; stylised to be one of the most authentic Japanese Gardens in Australia, a stroll through will reveal a number of Japanese cultural features and native flora, including the iconic Sakura, or Cherry Tree.
Dubbo features a range of shopping options, including several malls, boutique stores and markets. The Dubbo CBD is brimming with activity and is a popular destination for those looking for the familiarity of a busy city.
