Home of the Dog on the Tuckerbox

Nestled on the Hume Highway approximately 95 kilometres west of Canberra is the township of Gundagai, a popular feature in Australian lore since its settlement in 1838. Gundagai’s rich history and position on the Hume make it both a convenient stop-over on the drive between Melbourne and Sydney and a fantastic cultural experience.

Gundagai is possibly most famously known for the monument known as the Dog on the Tuckerbox, which was cast in 1938 as a tribute to the pioneers of the area. The statue has become well-known for drivers on the Melbourne-Sydney route as a stopping point to break up the long car journey. The monument was based on an old bush fable, and was erected as a tribute to the early pioneers of the area. To this day, the town of Gundagai continues to celebrate the Dog on the Tuckerbox, and it makes the perfect Instagram opportunity for any trip to Gundagai and its surrounding suburbs.

For another piece of the region’s history, a visit to the Old Gundagai Gaol is a must. The town and its surrounds were terrorised by bushrangers in the 1800s, and many of these men and women were tried and held in these cells. The infamous bushranger Captain Moonlite was once held here, and was later buried in the region. The gaol is a rare look at the structures of the time, and is open to explore seven days a week.

Settled on the Murrumbidgee River and its floodplains, Gundagai has seen many floods over the years, the earliest recorded being the devastating floods of 1952, which all but swept the town away. To logistically travel over these major floodplains, four wooden bridges were constructed, despite no longer being in use they are still standing today. A trek around the Gundagai River Walk allows for a picturesque view of these former feats of engineering.
