If you’re spending time in Newcastle, it’s well worth venturing out for a drive and exploring more of what the famed Hunter region has to offer.
For a taste of art and history in the Lower Hunter Valley, there is no better place to find it than in the charming riverside city of Maitland. Just 35 kilometres north-west of Newcastle, Maitland is awash with quaint countryside murals and historical sites; a pleasant weaving of local modern art between the remains of its 19th century architecture. To learn about the city’s beginnings and its now inoperable Maitland Gaol and other famous sites, the East Maitland Heritage Walk takes travellers on a journey to several heritage building locations, providing an account on the places and people that once lived there. Another favourite site to visit for history buffs is the industrial Walka Water Works water pumping station built in 1887 to supply water to Newcastle and its neighbouring towns. After your tour around the station, take a seat by the riverside and enjoy a relaxed picnic.
The famous Hunter Valley Wine Region is Australia’s oldest wine producing region and is known for its award-winning wineries and stunning scenery. Make your first stop in the region to Cessnock, a town renowned for its food, beer and relaxation. For some good old fashioned, mouth-watering pub grub, look no further than the Australia Hotel Bar & Grill, a traditional bistro serving up quality modern Australian cuisine 7 days a week. Take your holiday to the area a step further and completely unwind and let all your worries melt away with a spa and relaxation treatment at The Skin Salon Medispa.
From Cessnock, drive deeper into the heart of the Valley to Singleton, an enchanting town on the banks of the Hunter River, set against the backdrop of its sea of rolling vineyard-blanketed hills. In the city itself you’ll find heritage colonial buildings, museums, cafés and one of the world’s largest sundials. If you’re visiting the area, you can’t miss an opportunity to journey to one of the town’s famed wineries. The award-winning Catherine Vale Wines vineyard near the town of Broke should be on anyone’s itinerary when passing through the region.
Take a drive down south to visit the Lake Macquarie region, the home of Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake. Lake Macquarie is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor leisure time. Relax on one of the many quiet beaches, visit one of the many local water sports companies to hire a paddleboard, or take a ride on a thrilling jet boat.
Take in the many scenic views in and around town
For those who plan on remaining locally, Newcastle’s stunning scenery provides a backdrop for many of the area’s walking tracks.
The Newcastle Memorial Walk along the town’s coast is a scenic walk that allows you to learn about Australia’s history and participation in World War I. Built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, the walk also acts as a memorial for the local men and women who lost their lives in war.
The Bathers Way Coastal Walk is a two-hour walk that starts at Nobbys Lighthouse and stretches to Glenrock Reserve. Look out for the yellow information signs that guide you along the way and tell stories of Newcastle’s convict and Indigenous heritage.
