AnAustralianroadtrip conjures up images of red desert landscapes, rugged rocks carved out of the earth and seemingly endless blue skies. If there is one place that encompasses the Australian outback, it isDalby.
Located more than 200 kilometres north west of Brisbane, this destination provides a tour of everything Australia’s bushland is famous for. Although it’s a quiet place, the town comes alive every year for the headline festival: Australian Cotton Week. Here, Dalby pays homage to its agricultural heritage, with seven days of street parades, horse racing events, kids activities and even fashion parades.
Staying in the town means you’ll have easy access to some of Queensland’s prime destinations, too. If you’re into exploring the great outdoors, the Bunya Mountains and Broadwater Conservation Park provide you the space to explore your natural surrounds - and perhaps meet a native animal or two. In many locations here, you’ll be able to arrange a hike or bushwalk. There are plenty of options for all experience levels, meaning no one will be left out of the fun.
A short drive away, you also have the opportunity to explore rainforests and expansive natural lakes at the local environmental parks.
To explore the history of the area, there’s nowhere better than the Jimbour Homestead and surrounding gardens. Here, you’ll be introduced to the lives of some of the first European settlers to the region and get a glimpse into a simpler time.
