Mount Isa Airport connects this famous Outback mining town to Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville. Whether you’re arriving in Mount Isa for business or pleasure, you’re bound to have a memorable stay.
Mount Isa lies on the edge of the rugged red Selwyn Ranges on the banks of the Leichhardt River which divides it into ‘Townside’ and ‘Mineside’. The CBD and most of the restaurants, cafes and accommodation are located in Townside.
The mine dominates Mount Isa and it’s easy to understand why: it’s the city’s reason for existence. Founded in the 1920s, this is the biggest producer of lead, silver, zinc and copper in the world. Although you can’t visit the vast working mine, you can visit a recreation of one at the Hard Times Mine in central Mount Isa, where a former miner will guide you around 1km of tunnels.
