Tieri is a small mining town in the Central Highlands of Queensland, 900km from Brisbane. As a relatively new town, established in 1983 by Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Holdings Pty Ltd, it was built to service the local coal mines. The streetsthatmakeupTieri are named after cattle stations that first surrounded the area.
Sitting on Australia's largest coal deposit, the Bowen Basin, be sure to drive around the massive Oaky Creek Coal Mine, only 18km from the town. This mine has two underground processes and a preparation plant. It produces one of the most sought after premium quality coking coals.
