Nature lovers won’t want to miss Cradle Mountain, the starting point of the epic six-day hike known as the Overland Track. In the far northwest, the untamed Tarkine Forest Reserve is home to Tasmania’s charismatic predators, the Tasmanian devil, spotted-tail quoll and eastern quoll, as well as mountains, rivers, sandy beaches and wild coastline.
Northwest Tasmania has more homely pleasures, too. The city of Burnie is a creative hub with a profusion of handsome Art Deco buildings and inviting seaside restaurants. It is also home to the Hellyers Road Distillery, which makes a single malt crowned Australia’s best in 2010.
