Kununurra is a place that showcases Australia’s wild beauty at its best. Those prepared to get off the beaten track and explore here will be richly rewarded with sights and experiences you simply can’t get anywhere else.
Lake Kununurra Sunsets
Lake Kununurra is a man-made reservoir that was formed when the Diversion Dam was made in the 1960s, and since this time it has become a valuable wetlands habitat and a fantastic place for people to enjoy all kinds of water sports and lakeside relaxation. There are sailing boats and kayaks to hire, scenic seaplane flights, and a whole lot more to explore here. There’s a beautiful restaurant and café out on the water, so even if not everyone in your group is up for wild water times, they will still be able to have a lovely day here. If you have a keen angler in the family, you will want to take advantage of the fishing tours that run out of here, or if you prefer to enjoy someone else’s catch of the day with a glass of wine, there’s sunset dining cruises as well – a fantastic way to take in the scenery and fully explore this beautiful area.
Aboriginal Art Adventures
Kununurra is home to a great selection of amazing Aboriginal art galleries. Along with paintings, they also sell a wide range of practical and decorative items, perfect for souvenirs and gifts. Artlandish Aboriginal Art Gallery is one of the largest and most well regarded in the region – it is one of the biggest galleries focussed on Aboriginal art in the world. In addition to the massive gallery, they have a studio space where dozens of artists work each day. They regularly host “Artists in residence” events, so if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see one of these masterpieces in the making as it’s created right before your eyes. Right near local landmark Kelly’s Knob (a great place to get a birds eye view of the town and surrounds) there is Waringarri Aboriginal Arts Gallery – in addition to the gallery they run a number of educational and entertaining cultural tours, from art trails to bush tucker, to a Corroboree under the Stars, there are any number of absolutely unforgettable experiences on offer here sure to delight the whole family.
Bright Diamonds
One of the things this region is most famous for is Diamonds – this is where the world-renowned Argyle pink diamonds are found, along with champagne and cognac diamonds too. Kimberley Fine Diamonds in Kununurra is one of the best places to see (and shop for) diamonds – and because you’re getting them straight from the source, the prices are very competitive. They have a team of skilled jewellers on hand, so you can pick out the perfect stone and have it made into a one of a kind heirloom to treasure. If you’re feeling flush, you can pick yourself up a breathtaking new piece of jewellery, but even if you’re just there to window shop it’s well worth a look, with plenty of information about the jewels of the region to be found here.
