The allure of Rome is strong – this was once the centre of Western civilisation, and its ruins and remnants are everywhere to be discovered. The Spanish Steps, Vatican City with the sensational Sistine Chapel and a love for food are all rolled into a heady mixture that will tempt anyone.
Rome’s grandeur
Rome is a stunning city with a sight to see on what feels like every corner. One of the most stunning of all is the Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire, and a true sight to behold. It was once the scene of many gladiator fights and now hosts considerably less lethal performances throughout the year that can only be upstaged by the architecture that surrounds them.
You also can’t visit Rome without climbing the Spanish Steps. You can reach the summit and learn the full story of their creation or simply sit for a while and take in the heady atmosphere of the city. The 138 steps are a wonderful collection of straight and weaving pathways decorated with flowers that attract the creative souls of the city, inspired by the beauty of the area.
Savour the flavours of Italy
Italy is, of course, renowned for its wonderful cuisine. Pizza is found throughout the city, but the real love affair here is with pasta. One of the simplest yet most flavoursome dishes is the classic carbonara. Fresh pasta mixed with rich cheese, eggs and the finest bacon or prosciutto, you must savour the different approaches to the classic dish whilst visiting the city. Many locals swear by Da Danilo on Via Petrarca, but ask a dozen Romans and you’ll get a dozen recommendations.
If you want to get away from restaurant dining and sample wonderfully authentic food by the beach, travel along the coast to Ladispoli.
This town doesn't just serve wonderful food, it also offers long stretches of beach under a glorious blue sky in the summer. You’ll find interesting attractions such as Torre Flavia - a fascinating ancient tower with a colourful history you’ll be eager to learn more about.
A walk through history
Just over 60 km away, taking the E80 along the coast, is Civitavecchia, a beautiful coastal town. Forte Michelangelo is one of the key landmarks in the city, a 16th century fortress with a number of hidden passageways leading to the heart of the city. While other architects began the building of the fortress, it was the legendary Michelangelo who applied the finishing touches in 1535.
Just ten minutes away from Rome Fiumicino Airport is Ostia Antica, home to some of the most ancient ruins in the country. This large archaeological park can be compared to Pompeii for the significance it holds in Italy’s history. The towns can be wandered around freely and is worth visiting purely to gaze at the amphitheatre and Roman baths which offer a slice of how the Romans once lived.
