Getting to Abbotsford Convent - Melbourne banner

Once a working convent, Abbotsford Convent is now home to a community of multi-disciplined artists. The convent is surrounded by beautiful gardens and has been converted to a series of studios for artists from all disciplines including writers, illustrators, painters and animators. It’s also home to cafes, bars, restaurants, function spaces and galleries. Pop in for a drink at the Boiler Room Bar or The Shadow Electric, or stop by for a meal at Lentil as Anything, Cams Cafe, Kappaya, or the Convent Bakery.

In addition, Abbotsford Convent hosts many different events, designed to entertain all year round.

High Tea with a Twist

Bursaria Fine Foods will be host to a series of afternoon tea events entitled “A Touch of…”. The events will be held on the third Sunday of each month from 2-4pm and will showcase the food and music of Bursaria. There will be a DJ as well as complimentary drink upon arrival and savoury and sweet treats to tantalise your tastebuds.

Makers Market

Also taking place on the third Sunday of every month, is the Abbotsford Convent Makers Market. You’ll find everything from jewellery to toys, sculptures to home decor, photography, textiles, wood and more at the markets – everything homemade.

Shirt and Skirt Market

Right outside the Makers Market, is the Shirt and Skirt Market, a market for aspiring designers to showcase their works. The markets will sell fashion for men, women and children as well as some jewellery.

There are also exhibitions that take place at the Convent for limited times, and there are plenty of workshops and classes if you want a more hands-on experience. Workshops and classes include everything from Tai Chi to photography, writing and life drawing. Guided tours of the convent also take place regularly.
