Every year on January 26, Australia celebrates its official national day – Australia Day. On 1788, the first fleet of British ships arrived in New South Wales and the flag of Great Britain was raised at Port Jackson. Over the past few decades interest and participation in Australia Day has been on the rise and all the states and territories now celebrate this public holiday at the same time. From fireworks to barbecues, concerts to festivals and sports matches, there are a multitude of events planned around the country to mark Australia Day 2015.
If you’re going to be in Brisbane for Australia Day 2015, Hertz Brisbane has you covered with a Brisbane Airport car hire. Brisbane’s South Bank is typically the centre of Australia Day festivities. It’s a day crammed with music, family entertainment, art installations, a flag raising and of course topped off with a big fireworks show.
The Healthstream Aquatic Centre on George St will be hosting the giant Australia Day Pool Party. Start the day off at the QUT lawn opposite the Goodwill Bridge, soaking up Triple J’s Hottest 100 while watching the cricket at the giant outdoor cinema. Fuel up at the barbecue and cool off under the sun – there’s a paddling pool and a dunking machine, then head inside to the indoor swimming pool, where there’s a giant 25 metre inflatable. The music, games and fun run from 11am to 3pm with entry by gold coin.
If you are in Brisbane for the whole holiday long weekend, on Sunday January 25, just prior to Australia Day 2015, why not head along to the free, Australia Day themed Passionate about Photography exhibition? This will be at Orleigh Park, Hill End Terrace, from 8.30am to 11.30am. Wear something Australian, bring along some flags to wave or other patriotic props. Passionate About Photography is a monthly photo shoot in or around Brisbane that’s free to attend, either as a photographer or a subject of photographs (or you can come as both). Copies of images will be made available to subjects after the photo shoot at no cost. You can have shots alone, as a couple or in a group.
