Western Australia’s Golden Outback, home to the famous Wave Rock formations, is sure to dazzle with its plains, rocky outcrops and even sparkling sandy beaches. With your Perth Airport car rental, this route is an easy round trip starting and ending in the city.
From Perth drive to York, originally the first inland town in Western Australia. Stroll Main St, visit the museums and antique shops, and sample old school confectionery. Country style accommodation is a highlights; a farm stay is an ideal overnight option.
From York, make your way towards the Tin Horse Highway in Kulin, where you’ll find amazing equine sculptures created by local farmers. Then it’s on to the tiny town of Hyden. Head out to Wave Rock – pre book your tour ahead of time. This landform resembles a massive surf wave. It is made of multi coloured granite and will astound you in the flesh. Afterwards, cool off in the salt water pool and enjoy floating around, perhaps finished off with an Aussie style BBQ and all you can eat salad bar at the motel restaurants.
Southwest of Hyden, Lake Grace is situated in what’s known as the Central Wheatbelt. It is most famous for its pink salt lakes and wildflowers. Be sure to have a meat pie and some coffee while here, and check out the visitor centre.
Take state route 107 west to Wagin, a historic rural town. Marvel at the original and recreated buildings at the Wagin Historical Village. The cafes and pubs serve up good casual fare. Along the way, stop off at Australia’s largest emu farm, or Australia’s largest yabby (freshwater crustacean) exporter. Buy emu oil products, or fresh or cooked crayfish, among other things.
From Wagin it’s a straightforward drive along the Albany Highway to Perth, where you can return your Perth car hire and prepare to head home.
