What started as the mere spark of an idea in 1993 has evolved into the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, hosting more than 200 events every year. In 2015 it will run from February 27 – March 15, filling Melbourne’s bars, restaurants, laneways and rooftops as well as regional Victoria. For food lovers there’s no better time to visit this metropolis, and remember Hertz Melbourne has you covered when it comes to Melbourne Airport car hire. We recommend staying centrally near Queensbridge Square for the festival; try the Crown Promenade Hotel, Langham or the Melbourne Short Stay Apartments.
Melbourne’s obsession with artisan baking will take off, with baking stars from around Australia taking the reins of the Festival Artisan Bakery & Bar every day to prepare all sorts of goodies to eat in or take away.
At Chef Jam, international culinary stars Rodney Scott and Eric Werner will share personal stories about their food journeys. Book a ticket to the opening party and you can sample Scott’s down home South Carolina pit cooked BBQ. At various restaurants across Melbourne, as part of the global chef and wine dinners, you can enjoy one off dining experiences as guest chefs team up with top eateries.
As part of the Open Kitchen weekend, (28 Feb & 1 Mar) you can wander along the river, pausing at pop up kitchens and outdoor bars. There will be more than 10 events including a Food Truck Jam, a Pirate and Pimm’s Adventure and a fiesta at Southgate. On top of that there will be stalls and live cooking demos. The same weekend will see South Wharf Promenade transformed into a hawker style food fest, with restaurants serving street food along the south banks of the Yarra.
For those who like to be in the know, get ahead of the curve with a sneak peek at Victoria’s wholesale fruit and vegetable market. See the first trends of 2015 before they hit shelves, meeting growers and wholesalers and getting a sense of market life. (This will be the last chance to visit the Melbourne Markets before they move to Epping.)
Fans of Mexican and Greek cuisine can take a masterclass in outdoor cooking with Paul Wilson and George Calombaris. A fondue party is also on the schedule, as is a three-course Venetian dining and sensory experience.
