The iconic Mindil Beach Sunset Markets is a must-do experience when visiting Darwin. Set beside one of Australia’s best beaches right in time for an unforgettable sunset, you’ll find an array of entertainment and stalls offering arts and crafts as well as cuisine from all over the world. They are held every Thursday and Sunday night during Darwin’s dry season. This means you can wander around in the tropical night air and enjoy the atmosphere as the sun begins to set over the ocean.
There are nearly 60 food stalls featuring international food from the different continents. Enjoy food native to places like Turkey, Greece, Sri Lanka, South America, North Africa India and South East Asia. And of course, you can sample some scrumptious Aussie outback tucker.
Grab some dinner from one of the stalls and enjoy it on the beach as you watch the stunning ocean sunset. There are also a few chairs and tables on the grassy areas you could sit at to eat or else you could bring along your own picnic rug. Alcohol isn’t sold at the markets but you are permitted to bring your own.
The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets boasts over 200 stalls selling all kinds of arts and crafts. You’ll find stalls selling paintings, jewellery, clothes, leatherworks and indigenous art. There are also masseurs so you can ease some pre-holiday tension and tarot readers if you want to take a glimpse into your future.
Adding to the atmosphere is a range of live entertainment including street theatre performers, cultural dancers, acrobats, magicians and musicians. If you are travelling with kids, you’ll find that there is plenty to keep them entertained including jumping castles, pony rides, clowns and sometimes even a petting zoo.
This year the markets kick off on Thursday 25th of April honouring ANZAC Day. From then, the markets run every Thursday and Sunday evening throughout Darwin’s dry season. The last market of the year will be 31 October 2013. On Thursdays they open at 5pm and close at 10pm. On Sundays they open at 4pm and close at 9pm. In the event of rain, the markets won’t be operating.
The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are about a 15-20 minute walk from the city. If you’d prefer not to walk, there’s a shuttle bus that picks people up from major hotels or else it’s an easy drive in the hire car you picked up from Hertz Darwin airport. There’s plenty of parking so you’ll easily find somewhere to leave your Darwin Airport hire car while you go and enjoy the markets.
