Perth climate and weather byHertz AU

Perth climate and weather banner

Australia’s climate varies hugely due to the sheer size of the country – nearly 8 million square kilometres. But wherever you choose to go, Hertz has you covered for car hire in Australia. Being located in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia’s seasons are opposite to patterns in the Northern Hemisphere. Winter runs from June to August while winter falls during the Christmas holidays. There is less contrast between summer and winter than there is in many other countries.

Generally speaking, the north is hotter and things cool down the further south you go. The northern states have a more tropical climate and typically experience warmer weather, with wetter summers – this can include showers, storms and the occasional cyclone over the summer. Outside of monsoon season, winters are more settled, with milder, cooler weather. The southern states, closer to the coast, enjoy more temperate weather and cooler winters.

Australia has a relatively dry climate – the only drier continent is Antarctica – receiving less than 600mm of rainfall on average per year. The majority of land in the this country is desert. Temperatures can soar into the 40s or even 50s, leading to bushfires and droughts from time to time. Rainfall is highly seasonal in Australia. Snow occurs in the highlands near the east coast, in New South Wales and Victoria, as well as Tasmania and ACT. UV rays are strong down under and the sunlight can burn skin within minutes. Be sure to cover up and wear sun screen during the warmer months and particularly if you’re out during the middle of the day.

Perth’s wettest season is winter, when things cool down to around 18 degrees. In contrast, February is the peak of summer, averaging 31 degrees, with sea breezes helping to keep the heat in check. In Western Australia more generally, the northwest sees a wetter summer and the interior part of the region is dry and hot.

Wherever you choose to visit, there’s bound to be a region perfectly suited to your preferences across the eight states and territories. Sun lovers are spoiled when it comes to choice of beaches, while others chasing the cool head for the mountains, and the main cities in the south east present a more settled, steady climate all around. And wherever you are, a different type of atmosphere is just a short trip away.
