If you are hoping to view an impressive range of visual arts on your trip to Adelaide, the Art Gallery of South Australia is something to put on your must-do list.
Established in 1881, the Art Gallery of South Australia houses over 35,000 works of art. These works of art form permanent collections as well as visiting exhibitions.
Located on the cultural North Terrace, it’s also right near the State Library of South Australia, the University of Adelaide and the South Australian Museum, so you are in prime position for a day of culture.
The Art Gallery of South Australia contains a range of renowned permanent collections which showcase the development of Australian art from the colonial period right up to the present day. This includes an impressive collection of Aboriginal desert dot paintings as well as 19thcentury colonial art featuring oil paintings, watercolours, sculpture, silver and furniture.
International art includes art from North America, an Asian collection featuring South East Asian ceramics and European art from the 15th to 20th century. There is also an Islamic gallery, the only one in Australia.

Almost every Tuesday lunchtime, free talks are held at 12.45pm.
The gallery is open all year round, every day of the week except for Christmas Day. The gallery opens at 10am and closes at 5pm.
Entry to the gallery is free. Some exhibitions will incur an entry fee.
The Art Gallery is easily accessible by either public transport or your rental car. If you are driving the hire car you picked up at Hertz Adelaide Airport Car Hire, you can park it in the carpark opposite the Art Gallery.
