Brisbane is home to plenty of quality retail outlets and shopping centres, but beyond malls there are lots of great markets in this area.
The Collective Markets are the newest incarnation of the South Bank Lifestyle Markets. Held along the cobbled streets of Stanley St Plaza on Friday nights and Saturday and Sunday during the day, they offer live music, delicious food, and lots of quirky, cool items, including eco friendly and vintage finds. Fashion, accessories, furniture, collectibles, homewares, photography and arts and crafts.
From December 12 to December 23, a special South Bank Christmas Market will be set up, and is set to become an annual tradition as part of the Christmas in Brisbane programme. Look out for a multitude of Christmas themed products, from puddings and cakes to ornaments, decorations and trees, cards and toys. This will be accompanied by live entertainment with carol singers, kid’s entertainment and festive lights.
The monthly BrisStyle twilight markets showcase the best of local artisans at King George Square. Adult and children’s apparel, beauty products, art, and trinkets – there’s no better place to support Queensland wares. Many of the stall holders also run Etsy businesses, so if you can’t get enough of them here, be sure to look them up online.
The historic Mt Gravatt Showgrounds on Logan Rd, located on the south side of Brisbane, houses a Sunday market from 6am to noon. Here you can do your weekly shop for fresh fruit and market for a steal, with fresh produce in spades. Alongside the usual suspects you’ll also find everything from durian to dragon fruit, bamboo to okra and other exotic spices, teas and cheeses. Among the grocers is a small food court with plenty to tempt the tastebuds. On top of this, the Mt Gravatt Markets also host a flea market. In this section you can pick up anything from power tools to appliances and music instruments – it’s like a giant car boot sale. Locals and out of towners alike flock here to find bargains and while away the morning.
This gem of a market is a half hour drive from the city with your Brisbane car hire, out at the coast. They are held at Little Bayside Park on Royal Esplanade each Sunday from 8am to 3pm. Expect to find an eclectic array of quirky handmade and secondhand goods, as well as new items – anything from vintage records to toys, snacks. There are rides for kids and live music too.
