Fantastic year-round weather makes Darwin a tempting proposition at any time. Open air markets are a highlight of shopping here. Book your Darwin Airport car hire with Hertz and start planning your getaway now.

Darwin Markets

Ease into the Darwin vibe with a leisurely browse. The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are held on Thursday and Sunday evenings during the dry season. Roughly 200 stalls line the waterfront, showcasing crafts, jewellery and delicious edibles. Soak up the street performances and live music, the dancers and acrobats. It’s best to get there early. Stake out a place on the dunes or grass and watch the fiery sunset across the harbour.

The Saturday morning Parap markets are worth checking out, too. Here you’ll find mouth-watering tropical drinks, Asian dishes, artisan foods and crafts. Cuisine is a sure bet. Local honey or jam is always a good buy. Keep an eye out, too, for Aboriginal art – prints, textiles and carvings.

The Smith Street mall Shopping, Darwin

The heart of Darwin is home to lots of local boutiques. The main hub is the Smith Street mall, or simply ‘The Mall’. Eclectic gifts and homewares and funky clothing labels are side by side here, but overall fashion is the name of the game.

Look out for world class Northern Territory specialties. Products you might like to bring home include crocodile leather – saltwater skins have the most intricate pattern and are the most valuable. Crocodile handbags or belts are popular choices, but there are plenty of smaller and subtler trinkets and souvenirs available. Also consider picking up some local pearls – try Paspaley Pearls, which is famous for its gorgeous and unique pieces of jewellery. Whatever you decide to buy, it’s sure to be an unforgettable memento of your Northern Territory trip.

Casuarina Square Shopping, Darwin

You can’t go past Casuarina Square – this is the biggest shopping mall in the Northern Territory. It’s been around since 1973 and boasts approximately 200 stores. Department stores, supermarkets and specialty shops – you’ll find it all, and anything else you can imagine, here. There’s plenty of parking and it’s just a short drive north of the city centre with your Hertz Darwin Airport Car Rental from Hertz.
