Darwin is a place with plenty to do, but sometimes you just need to get away from it all. Thankfully, there’s an amazing array of wonderful getaway spots all around Darwin. Here’s some of our favourite escapes.

Kakadu Crocodile Hotel

Your friends may claim to have stayed in some pretty interesting places, but can they say they’ve spent some nights in the belly of a giant crocodile? This iconic hotel is literally in the shape of an enormous croc. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is purely a gimmick hotel though, as part of the Mercure chain, the experience here is quality all the way. Owned by local Indigenous people, there’s a beautiful gallery of Aboriginal art throughout the hotel and there are plenty of opportunities to engage meaningfully with the Indigenous history of the area.

Crab Claw Island Resort

Crab Claw Island is on the Cox Peninsula, 130 kilometres southwest of Darwin. You can access the island via road except in the highest of high tides, making it an easy place to get to. The cabins on the beach make for a welcoming sight and the staff will go out of their way to make you feel at home. There’s something for everyone here – all the fishing you could want, pools to swim in, wilderness to walk through and a beach to enjoy.

St Andrews Serviced Apartments

Katherine is a fun place to explore for a few days, and these fully contained serviced apartments are a great pace to call home. Generously sized and fully air-conditioned, you will be pleased to come back to these amenities at the end of a long day of adventuring.

Kakadu Lodge

Three hours from Darwin and perfectly positioned to take advantage of the beauty of Kakadu are these family friendly cabins. With a generously sized lagoon pool and a poolside bar and bistro, this is an amazing base to explore all the abundant wildlife, waterfalls and beautiful rainforest Kakadu has to offer. There’s also plenty of camping sites here if that’s more your style.
