Whether you’re basing yourself in Perth for a short or long holiday, there’s a multitude of interesting destinations within a short drive away. For a change of pace or scenery, you don’t have to go far to wind up somewhere new and different, be it a desert, mountain or winery. Here are some ideas to inspire you to jump in a Perth Airport car rental and hit the road.

Pinnacles Desert

A visit to this area should include a trip to the limestone formations of the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park, three hours’ drive north of Perth. Springtime is the ideal season to visit as wildflowers begin to bloom. Come in the morning or later in the day for milder temperatures and better lighting by which to view the moonlike rock features. Most animals living in the park are nocturnal though you may be lucky enough to see kangaroos or emus.

Swan Valley

Only a 20-minute drive out of Perth, Swan Valley is Western Australia’s oldest wine growing region. Tour the local cellars, and restaurants, then check out the quaint furniture shops and art galleries. There are some lovely places to stop for a picnic such as Bell Rapids.

Lancelin Sand Dunes

The amazing Lancelin sand dunes are about an hour and a half north from Perth – perfect for a sunny day out. Go sandboarding down the 45 degree angle hills and snap some pictures, then kick back and relax – or keep the fun going on the sand with a dirt bike or in a 4WD,

Bunbury

A two-hour drive from Perth, Bunbury is at the heart of the Geographe region. Natural treasure abound in this area. Back Beach is a stroll away from the cafe strip. Mangrove Cove in Leschenault Estuary is home to rich mangrove lands that are thousands of years old. Make your own way through the boardwalks and immerse yourself in this lush ecosystem. There are dozens of water birds at Mangrove Cove so keen naturists will find plenty to occupy their attention.

Rockingham

Just under an hour south west of Perth, Rockingham is synonymous with bottlenose dolphins. A boat cruise is the best way to see them in their natural setting and you can even swim amongst the creatures in these clear waters. Sailing, windsurfing, diving, fishing and cravving are also good options in Rockingham.
