The Blue Mountains
An hour and a half from Sydney are the iconic Blue Mountains, a peaceful getaway from the city at any time of year. A plethora of restaurants, markets and quaint shops clamour for your attention. Various bush walks, climbs and lookouts offer plenty of opportunity to explore nature. The Three Sisters is the most outstanding landmark, attracting millions of sightseers every year. These rock formations are said to be three sisters turned to stone, according to Aboriginal legend. Viewed at different times of day and throughout the seasons, the colours and shadows change dramatically.
Bulli Beach
An hour down the coast from Sydney, just north of Wollongong, Bulli Beach is a picturesque one-kilometre stretch of sand. The Sea Cliff Bridge boasts spectacular views over the sea. Bulli village itself has a rich history. Surf spots, waterfalls, dunes and lookouts abound in the area.
Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk
An hour and a half south of Sydney will deposit you in the Southern Highlands. The Illawarra Fly is an awesome attraction in the rainforest – a walk through the canopy of treetops, peaking at 45 metres above the ground at Knights Tower, with unsurprisingly amazing views.
Seven Mile Beach
Two hours south of Sydney lies Seven Mile Beach National Park, packed with options for visitors. A beachside barbecue taking in the ocean views, perhaps. Walking tracks through the forest will bring you up close with the local wildlife, culminating in a well-placed lookout spot. After a long walk along the idyllic beach, you won’t want to leave.
Hunter Valley
Three hours northwest of Sydney is the Hunter Valley, a celebrated wine growing region. Vineyards, breweries, cafes and galleries and the charming villages will keep you well occupied for as long as you care to stay.
