This three day drive will take you from Brisbane City to Ipswich and across the Great Dividing Range to Warwick before heading to the villages of Tamborine Mountain. Mountainous views, ancient trees, wildlife, waterfalls and fresh creeks are the order of these three days. Bring the camera and a spare memory stick!
Brisbane to Warwick – 150 km
From Brisbane take the Ipswich Motorway to Ipswich – Queensland’s oldest provincial city. You’ll be wowed by the design and architecture of the stately old heritage buildings in Ipswich. From Ipswich drive through the Scenic Rim, one of the region’s most beautiful areas.
After a fascinating tour around Ipswich’s stately homes, clear your head with a relaxing and picturesque drive through the Scenic Rim. On the Boonah-Fassifern Road (between Boonah and the Cunningham Highway) you’ll pass the Templin Historical Museum, offering an insight into the local area’s history.
Take the Cunningham Highway at the small town of Aratula and ascend the steep rise toCunningham’s Gap, which affords some splendid views from the top looking back towards Brisbane. Then you’ll arrive in Warwick, which like Ipswich harks back to a rich pioneer history and culture. The post office and town hall are top examples of historic sandstone buildings built at the height of the boom.
Warwick to Mt Tamborine – 190 km
From Warwick you’ll head through the ranges of the Queensland-New South Wales Borderusing the Warwick-Killarney Rd. Enroute you’ll pass through Killarney, a small township, and just beyond, the awesome Queen Mary Falls, part of the Great Dividing Range. Here, water gushes down a rock wall and down to the valley floor where it meets the Condamine River. This is a great picnic spot and there’s a 2km circuit walk you can do in about half an hour. Carry on to the villages of Tamborine Mountain. Here you’ll find a passionate artistic community, with plenty of welcoming accommodation options.
Mt Tamborine to Brisbane – 70 km
Drive back down the mountain and then head for Lamington National Park, home tosubtropical rainforests and a tree top walk. Soak up the best that nature has to offer before taking Beechmont Rd to the Pacific Motorway and back to Brisbane.
