Alice Springs to Wycliffe Well – 372 km

Driving north from Alice Springs, make time to visit the Alice Springs School of the Air and hear a lesson being broadcast. At Ti Tree, sample some of the Outback’s finest wines.

The route to Wycliffe Well is rich in desert colours and scenery. Wycliffe Well is said to beAustralia’s UFO capital. For a true outdoors experience, pitch a tent and camp out. The holiday park is surprisingly lush and green! Nearby Davenport Range National Park offers spectacular rugged terrain, water holes and wildlife.

Once you get to Tennant Creek, cool off with a dip in nearby Mary Ann Dam. This charming town boomed during Australia’s last big gold rush in the 1930s, and today you can fossick and pan for gold, and tour heritage sites.

Around here you’ll find that the Elliott and Newcastle Waters Discovery Trail – a network of roads off the main highway leading to cattle stations and war landmarks – offer lots to explore.

At the corner of the Explorer and Carpentaria highways you’ll reach the Hi-Way Inn, and from here you have access to plenty of great fishing.

Hi-Way Inn to Katherine – 260 km

Stop in at the Larrimah Museum to learn about the area’s World War II heritage, and grab a drink at the Larrimah Wayside Inn. At Mataranka, the thermal springs make for great relaxation.

The Katherine region and the Katherine Gorge call for exploration by boat or canoe. Walking through the bush also offers a different view.
