Located on the banks of the meandering Macquarie River, and originally occupied bytheWiradyuri Aboriginal people, Bathurst was the first inland settlement in Australia when it was founded in 1814. Today the city is perhaps best known for its motor racing circuit, enviably located at the summit of Mount Panorama, just 3km from theCBD.
But Bathurst isn’t just for motor sports enthusiasts.
The historic city centre boasts a wealth of period architecture, with many buildings dating back to the early 1800s and some splendid mansions and public buildings dating back to the mid-to-late 19th century, when Bathurst became Australia’s first gold rush town.
If you’re a foodie or wine lover, there’s plenty to satisfy you, too. The Bathurst region is a fertile area for farming and you can buy the local produce at the farmers’ market, every fourth Saturday of the month. And did we mention wine? There are a number of vineyards a short drive away, including Vale Creek Wines cellar door.
Mount Panorama Racing Circuit is a public road when there isn’t an event. So take the scenic drive and enjoy the epic views.
Howick St in the CBD is a go-to destination hosting a popular shopping strip and the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum. This is where Australia’s only complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton can be found. The museum also houses the Somerville Collection, which includes several dinosaur fossils and an extensive mineral gallery.
