On the quiet banks of the Macleay River on the North Coast of NSW lies the peaceful town of Kempsey. Not to be underestimated, this town is a hidden gem that’s far more than an overnight stopover.
Kempsey is located north of Port Macquarie, just a few kilometres inland of the NSW coast. The town itself contains numerous heritage buildings, museums and galleries, while the Macleay River makes it an idyllic location for boating, fishing and canoeing. Venture out into the surrounding region and you’ll find beautiful national parks, stunning beaches and picturesque rural landscapes to enjoy.
One of Kempsey’s most popular attractions it the Slim Dusty Centre, a fascinating collection of memorabilia and exhibitions dedicated to the iconic country music star for whom it is named. The town is also rich with Aboriginal heritage: stop by the Wigay Aboriginal Cultural Park to experience the local indigenous culture, go on a guided tour through the gardens and learn about traditional bush medicines and food. If you’re into artwork, you can’t miss the authentic works on display (and also for sale) at the Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery.
There are plenty of bushwalks, fishing spots and swimming holes to whet the appetite of nature lovers, whether it be Hat Head National Park, Limeburners Creek or any of the other surrounding areas. If you don’t want to travel far, there’s no shame in simply heading down to the banks of the Macleay River and soaking up the peaceful country air.
When it comes to accommodation, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From camping grounds and budget accommodation to more luxurious retreats, there’s something for everybody in Kempsey.
