Narrandera is a charming rural town on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River. Located within the fertileRiverina region, the town is teeming with historical and natural beauty.
Founded in 1863 on lands occupied by the Wiradjuri people, the area was once a major farming region and a handy checkpoint for people on their way to the Victorian goldfields. Prosperity took off in the early 20th century with the establishment of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. This massive engineering project opened up the whole Riverina to the cultivation of rice, citrus fruits and grapes for which it is well known for today.
In the 1970s, Narrandera became a centre for Koala conservation when 20 of the marsupials were introduced to a reserve between the Murrumbidgee River and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Canal. There are now over 200 living in the region today.
Narrandera is easily reached by plane via its airport, with short flights to Griffith and Sydney. The town is located at the junction of the Sturt and Newell Highways and is an hour’s drive from Wagga Wagga.
