Of course, we can’t mention Tamworth without mentioning country music, but there’s plenty more to discover beyond the vocals and strings of the Country Music Capital. From excellent museums and galleries to wineries and foodie destinations, gorgeous parklands to National Parks, Tamworth is a city with a lot to offer and the perfect place to start your New England journey.
A City of Country Heritage
Having access to a Hertz rental car means you’ll get to explore some of the best spots (and best stays) in the area. First stop, Goonoo Goonoo Station. Located half an hour from Tamworth Airport, Goonoo Goonoo is the ideal place to base yourself for a visit to the region. This working cattle station and 19th century pastoral village has been beautifully restored and converted into luxury accommodation in the Tamworth area. The heritage-listed cottages on the property offer guests a touch of luxury, while beautifully capturing the heritage and charm of rural Australia.
Once you’ve settled in, make your way over to the on-site restaurant, Glasshouse. Savour some of the region’s fantastic local produce including locally sourced beef and produce. Whether you’re after a nourishing breakfast, long lunch or indulgent dinner, it’s a spot to sit back and savour the finest from the region.
While you’re here, we recommend spending some time exploring the ‘country music capital of Australia’, just 15 minutes up the highway. The city may be known for its country music obsession - which is very much alive - but that doesn’t mean you have to be a country lover to enjoy this lively town!
Located on the Peel River, Tamworth is the buzzing heart of the New England region, home to great galleries, museums and a lively main street. Visit the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame and get acquainted with the country twang that put Tamworth on the map. Located in a very fitting guitar-shaped building, the Country Music Hall of Fame is home to music memorabilia throughout the years. The Walk a Country Mile exhibit is a must-see in Tamworth - this interactive exhibit takes you on a journey through time and tells the story of country music in Australia.
After a day soaking up the sights of the town, treat yourself to an evening dining at The Workshop Kitchen. Renowned for their high quality seasonal menu and excellent wine list, this Tamworth institution sets the benchmark for culinary excellence in the region. Their menu features timeless Australian fare with a classic twist, with a strong focus on their wine offering (you’ll want to make sure you have a designated driver on hand for the journey back to Goonoo Goonoo).
Gateway to the New England Region
Looking to explore that little bit further afield? The New England region is awash with fantastic National Parks, charming country towns and unique cultural experiences that make it a stunning road trip destination.
You’ll want to start at Oxley Scenic Lookout - an easy highlight of any visit to Tamworth, this breathtaking spot should be high on your list. Just a short 5 minute drive out of town, this panoramic lookout offers the best views of Tamworth city, as well as sweeping views of the Peel River Valley - the locals tip is to visit at sunset. While you’re on the road, take yourself on a self drive food and wine tour and sample some local goodies.
Tamworth and surrounds are located in the New England Wine region, where you’ll find plenty of cellar doors, gourmet and specialty stores along the way. Stop in at Merilba Estate just outside of Uralla for tastings, or dine at their excellent on-site restaurant (you’ll want to make sure you have a designated driver on board). Don’t miss stopping by local towns along the way to fill up your basket. The charming villages of Barraba, Manilla and Nundle highlight the best of the Tamworth region. If you’re after a bit more of a nature fix, don’t miss Warrabah National Park and Nowendoc National Park, both two hours from Tamworth Airport. Bushwalk in these beautiful landscapes and cool off with a swim in pristine creeks and waterfalls.
Renowned for its laid back country lifestyle, country music scene, arts and culture, there is so much more to Tamworth than meets the eye. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway, or travelling further inland through rural NSW, Tamworth is ready to greet you with a warm country welcome.
