Yass is a beautiful town bursting with history just off the Hume Highway in New South Wales and only an hour from Canberra.
Yass was founded as far back as 1830 and its position on a lovely river on the road between Sydney and Melbourne made it an important rest stop for early settlers. Many of the pubs where these travellers stayed can still be seen today – as can Cooma Cottage, the home of the early Australian explorer Hamilton Hume.
Yass’s early wealth was built on the fine wool produced in the region. Today, agriculture is still the biggest employer, but production has diversified to include wine and food crops. You can sample the gourmet produce of the Yass region at the excellent restaurants and bars along Comur Street.
Yass’s proximity to Canberra is another source of prosperity and it has become a commuter town for people looking for the best of both worlds: city salaries and rural town quality of life. You’ll see why when you walk down the streets lined with beautiful heritage architecture, charming antique shops and cute little gift shops.
