Welcome to Bundaberg, home of rum, sugar and the southern gateway to the Great Barrier Reef! With an airport and railway station linking it to Brisbane, Bundaberg is easily accessible to the many visitors who come here for the golden beaches and fantastic wildlife. But even if you’re only passing through ‘Bundy’ on the way to the coast, it’s worth putting some time aside to enjoy the sights.
Nearly 140 years of lucrative sugar production has left Bundaberg with a wealth of heritage buildings. Drive down Bourbong Street to see the weeping figs, Bundaberg School of Arts and the 125-year-old Commercial Bank. Around the corner on Quay Street, the Burnett Bridge and police station are worth taking in.
You can see more than 10,000 plants at Bundaberg Botanic Gardens. Better still, admire the beautiful grounds from the comfort of a vintage steam train run by the Australian Sugar Cane Railway, which restores old sugar industry locomotives.
