Also known as the Melon Capital of Australia, Chinchilla is a charming little town in Queensland’s Darling Downs Region. Despite being established well over 100 years ago, the town still has a population of just over 5,000; however, this has only helped preserve the history and local charm of the community surrounding the tree-lined main street.
As its nickname suggests, Chinchilla is widely known for its watermelons, honeydews and rockmelons. In fact, this humble town produces a quarter of the country’s melons and hosts the famous Chinchilla Melon Festival every two years. This celebration is not to be missed: from melon skiing and pip spitting to melon bungee and smashing contests, the event is great fun for all ages and the perfect opportunity to see the strong community spirit in all its glory.
Chinchilla isn’t just the Melon Capital. Another attraction that draws tourists all year round is an abundance of fossicking opportunities; many avid fossickers specifically come to seek out “Chinchilla Red” petrified wood. All you need to do is visit the Information Centre, pick up an official license and away you go! But before you do, be sure to take a quick break over the best tea and scones in town.
In town, drop by the historical museum, art gallery and cultural centre to peruse the artefacts and artwork. If you’re happy to venture a little further, try exploring the many fishing spots and bushwalks throughout the surrounding region. There are also several tourist drives, each offering an opportunity to experience the amazing local flora and fauna – not to mention a bit of local history.
