Just north of the New South Wales border lies the town of Warwick. This charming country town is a great place to stop when travelling through rural Queensland, and the friendly locals will make your stay a comfortable one.
One of the most popular destinations in the area is the Glengallan Homestead and Heritage Centre. This restored building is a fantastic place to begin your tour of Warwick. Once the grand vision of stockman John Deuchar, the homestead was commissioned in the 1860s but left unfinished when Deuchar was forced to submit to drought, debt and depression. The home lay derelict for around 70 years and passed through many hands before it eventually fell to the Glengallan Homestead Trust Limited, who opened it to the public in 2002. Today it represents the trying times of early settlers and helps visitors to understand and appreciate the town’s history. The homestead also attracts ghost hunters, with some reports of mysterious occurrences including gates that swing shut on their own. This adds a somewhat thrilling element to what is otherwise a pleasant stay, and will certainly appeal to the more imaginative.
For more insight into the history of the town, visit the Warwick Historical Society Museum. This collection of buildings tells the story of Warwick’s past through photos and personal effects, as well as farming equipment and machinery.
If exploring nature is more your cup of tea, head out to Main Range National Park for a day of bushwalking, hiking and swimming, or take along a tent and camp out. This stunning mountain range provides several walking tracks of varying difficulty, as well as lookouts and impressive scenery. No ghosts here, however the park will provide plenty of nocturnal activity—the local wildlife are rather inquisitive. You’ll make all kinds of friends in Warwick, Queensland.
