For a quick history lesson, Klemzig was Australia’s very first German settlement and took its name from a village in Prussia – an area which now lies in western Poland. Here you’ll find picnic facilities, BBQs, playgrounds and plenty of grassy areas to enjoy.
As it is just 7km from the city centre, Klemzig is well within reach of Adelaide’ most popular attractions. This means you are just 10 to 20 minutes from places like Adelaide Zoo, Adelaide Oval, Botanic Gardena, Aquatic Centre, National War Memorial and Central Market, just to name a few.
Part of Klemzig’s charm is that it offers such convenient access to the city’s hotspot without sitting right in the hustle and bustle of it. The leafy borough of Klemzig is one of the loveliest parts of Adelaide, and the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some well-earned downtime.
Klemzig has no shortage of lovely parks to explore, but the recent redevelopment of the grounds of the Gaza Sports and Community club is one of the most versatile – from the beautifully kept wide open swathes of green lawns to the landscaped gardens, this is a great place to enjoy a ramble. There’s a kids playground with plenty of interesting climbing equipment, and a modern BBQ area too, so you can enjoy some al fresco dining as well.
The River Torrens has an extensive array of walking and biking paths, and a section of the River Torrens Linear Trail Loops goes right through Klemzig. These are family friendly trails, where you can walk, jog or ride to your hearts desire. The high number of European deciduous trees in Adelaide means there are lots of seasonal changes to enjoy here, so whether it’s the fresh green shoots of spring or the glorious autumnal tones on show, these walks are always as photo-worthy as they are enjoyable. The fresh air is bound to do the whole family a world of good. If you’d rather not move about under your own steam, there’s also the O-Bahn guided busway – the fastest and longest guided busway in the world, which follows the path of the river taking you through some lovely vistas.
Klemzig is named after a city in Germany, and the influence of the predominantly German migrants that made their home here in colonial times is still evident in many street and place names and beautiful heritage buildings with a distinct German influence. They’re not the only Europeans to make their mark on the place over the years though, as the Dutch are also a significant contributor to Klemzig’s history. If you’d like to sample some European delicacies and pick up a few knickknacks, then The Dutch Pantry is going to be the place to go – they have an extensive menu of delicious food and lots of fun souvenirs to explore too.
Strictly speaking, this is slightly over the suburban border in Campbelltown, but many Klemzig residents make use of the Lochiel Park golf course. It’s claim to fame is being Adelaide’s most scenic and picturesque par 3 golf course, making it a fantastic choice for those who enjoy a moderate challenge in their golfing accompanied by beautiful bushland. The course has made some innovative choices in its grounds, which enthusiasts are sure to enjoy, and there’s a well stocked pro shop here too in case you want to upgrade your gear. They have a calendar of social events that is designed to be welcoming to players at all levels, and they pride themselves on being welcoming to visitors, so you can drop in and enjoy some golfing anytime.
