With a population of three thousand people, and just minutes from both the beach and the central district in Adelaide, it’s no surprise to find Plympton is a sought after suburb. There are plenty of things to do here regardless of your interests.
Explore History
The beautiful heritage-listed house Kandahar, built in the 1900s, is the appropriately historical headquarters of the West Torrents Historical Society in Plympton, and they regularly open their doors to the public for discussions, meetings and advice sessions – whether it’s local history or your own genealogy that’s of interest, they are well-placed to point you in the right direction. They have a lovely collection of historical documents and memorabilia that they can exhibit on request, and they’re also on a continuing mission to collect the recollections of the area’s oldest living people.
Capture the Moment
GFP Studios in Plympton offer a range of photographic services, with one of their specialties being family portraiture. It makes sense to get a few snaps done while you’re on holiday together as a family, while everyone is relaxed and happy and that holiday glow can be captured forever in a portrait, sure to be displayed pride of place when you get home. They offer a full array of postcards, prints and more, so however you want to display your beautiful new family portrait they will be able to offer you the very best advice. Whether you prefer a casual, candid or more formal style they’ll be happy to work with your requirements to make sure you wind up with pictures you absolutely adore.
Strap on your dancing shoes
For a night to remember, why not join one of the open nights at the Adelaide Rock and Roll Club. Specialising in the music and dance styles of the 50s and 60s, they have a range of beginner friendly classes so you can try out some swing dancing, and then take your new moves out into one of their many parties. They regularly have live bands providing the music, which adds to the historical vibes. It is a wonderful thing to do if you’re travelling solo – there’s nothing like sharing some awkward, or highly skilled dance moves to break the ice. If you want all the right clothes to go with your retro dancefloor stylings they have a great boutique here too so you can complete your 1950s or 1960s look.
Explore the community
Plympton Community Centre is a hub of activity, and there is always something going on here. Whether it’s the meetings of the various clubs and societies around town, or a fitness class there is hardly a day or night where there’s not something of interest happening. With a sewing and a billiards room there are all sorts of interesting classes as well, and the administration of the centre is always very welcoming to anyone who wishes to hire a space there, ensuring there is an ever changing menu of activity to choose from here.
