Echuca is situated 250km from Melbourne, on the border of Victoria and New South Wales, on the banks of the Murray River. Its location makes it an ideal spot to take a day to rest and explore on road trips between Sydney and Melbourne.
The name Echuca comes from an Aboriginal word that means 'meeting of the waters.' This just illustrates the importance of these rivers to this small, rural town. Today, the river offers an abundance of activities to delight anyone visiting the area. Spend a day taking in the scenery whilst enjoying a meal on a genuine paddle steamer, or from the comfort of one of the many bars and restaurants that line the Murray Esplanade.
Visit in August to experience the Riverboats Music Festival, which provides an eclectic line-up of musicians under the red gums in an amphitheater by the Murray River.
For a unique drinking experience visit the Star Hotel. Legend has it; the underground bar was built as a way for patrons to escape the harsh Australian heat. But when the hotel lost its liquor license in 1897, the owner continued to serve customers using an escape tunnel whenever needed. Today, the Star Hotel is a humble wine bar, but you can still explore the underground tavern, which sits untouched.
