Paraburdoo is an outback town, far from the hustle and bustle of city life. Surrounded by some of WA’s most spectacular scenery, at the foot of the internationally renownedKarijini National Park, it’s easy to relax and immerse yourself in nature here.
With around 1,500 residents, it’s a large enough town to have amenities but small enough that it’s easy to get away from people entirely and just enjoy peace and quiet in your natural surrounds.
Local highlights include Kelly’s Pool (a local water hole), the Aboriginal rock art at Ratty Springs, and touring the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Mine. You can enjoy some tasty local treats at the Paraburdoo Milk Bar (famous for its burgers, and a favourite with the locals), or enjoy the bistro atmosphere and gourmet tastes of the Paraburdoo Inn.
Paraburdoo is an excellent starting point for an adventure into the heart of the remote, red-soiled WA outback: the drive from Paraburdoo to Newman via Karijini will take you through some uniquely Australian scenery. The picturesque gorges, tunnels and waterfalls of Karijini make a highlight of any Australian road trip.
The town is also only 80km away from Tom Price, a popular tourist destination in its own right. Paraburdoo is on the fringes of the mountainous Hamersley Ranges, which run 460km from north to south, and makes for a breathtaking drive. Further afield, Mount Nameless is 4 km past Tom Price, and is the highest vehicle-accessible mountain in WA. The extraordinary views are a reward for anyone who takes the time to make the journey.
The winters in Paraburdoo and surrounds are very mild, making it an excellent road-trip destination to avoid winter’s chill.
