As a former ‘Capital of Culture’, Liverpool is well known for the rich and vibrant mix of sights and events that are held throughout the city. The friendly nature and energy of Liverpool are two of its main attractions, however, and they’re suffused throughout the city itself, lending it a unique charm.
A musical capital
You can’t mention Liverpool without mentioning The Beatles – after all, it’s the birthplace of this iconic and revolutionary band. The city is certainly proud of this heritage with a number of sights throughout the city. If you’re a fan of the band you can visit the home of John Lennon, discover the story behind their success at The Beatles Story museum then enjoy a drink at the place they played their first gig, the famous Cavern Club.
However, if classical music is more your thing then you can visit Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, a strikingly elegant venue playing host to a number of events from big concerts to live comedy.
Culture calling
In 2008, Liverpool was named Europe’s ‘Capital of Culture’ and since then it has gone from strength to strength in terms of redevelopment. Visit Albert Dock, Liverpool’s trendy waterfront area. It’s a scenic part of the city with historic dock buildings and tranquil waters.
While here, you can explore the artwork in the galleries of the Tate Liverpool, find unique gifts at the mix of independent shops before spending the evening at one of the many restaurants serving a cross-section of different cuisines. The dockside heritage can be explored at the Merseyside Maritime Museum, while the International Slavery Museum shines a fascinating light on the troubled history of the slave trade and Liverpool’s role in it.
The great British seaside
One of the best things about hiring a car in Liverpool is the chance it gives you to take a detour to the coast. Just 20km away on the A565 is the town of Formby, a place that is truly soothing for the soul. With glorious sandy beaches and surrounded by imposing sand dunes it’s a great day out when visiting Liverpool.
If you’re looking for a livelier day at the coast then travel up the M6 to Blackpool, often referred to as the ‘Las Vegas of the North’. Blackpool has a colourful seafront filled with casinos, arcades and lovably gaudy lights. It’s also famous for ballroom dancing which takes place in the ballroom at the bottom of Blackpool Tower, a giant structure, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, which overlooks the town.
A jumping off point
Car rental in Liverpool gives you access to so many other exciting places in and around England. Travel to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and appreciate the mountainous landscapes and friendly traditional towns that you pass through along the way. Or head south to Birmingham, the UK’s second city.
You can even drive to Wales, a country with a language all of its own (and bilingual road signs). Leave Liverpool on the A41 and in around 90 minutes you’ll arrive in the city of Bangor. It’s the oldest city in Wales and has a number of historic attractions including Bangor Abbey and Bangor Castle.
