Picton is a picturesque town located on the jagged north east extremity of New Zealand’s South Island. The town is part of the much lauded wine growing region of Marlborough – and is ideally located to explore by car, with Wellington 65km away east, and Blenheim 25km north.
As well as the innumerable wineries all within driving distance, there are also the gorgeous Queen Charlotte and Marlborough sounds right on the doorstep.
The town of Picton itself is pretty as a postcard, boasting a sheltered harbour and attractive seafront with plenty of galleries, cafes and restaurants, perfect for lazily whiling away a day. There’s also an aquarium, a floating maritime museum, as well as The Queen Charlotte Track, a popular attraction for active outdoorsy types.
Picton is easily one of the prettiest towns in New Zealand and has grown from a charming little fishing village into a world-class tourist destination, surrounded by pristine coastline and the Marlborough Sounds.
The region’s enviable climate is also the reason why wine flourishes here. And when you come to Picton, exploring the wineries is an absolute must. Sauvignon Blanc is Marlborough's specialty, but Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon are also produced and held in high regard.
Grab a designated driver and a wine trail map and get out and explore this dazzling corner of the world.
