There’s a real feeling of magic on each Hawaiian island. Whatever island you visit, you’ll be welcomed by the ‘aloha spirit’ and truly feel like you’re in paradise.
Be enchanted by Kauai
Kauai is known as the Garden Isle – and for good reason. This is a place that’s alive with colour. The mountains are a vivid earthy green, the waters sapphire blue and the sands a beautiful sugary white.
Swim in Kauai’s waters at Queens Bath, a unique tidepool filled with local sea life. To experience this Hawaiian wonder, take a short 45-minute drive up the H1-56N from Lihue Airport – along the way you’ll see the gorgeous east coast rolling past your window.
If you’re feeling even more adventurous, drive back down the HI-56 S from the direction you came for 15 minutes and dare to plunge into the waters of the Blue Room. Like many areas on the island, this wet cave with a secret back grotto is associated with Hawaiian spirits, so remember to treat the area as sacred.
The best way to taste Kauai is to shop at the local farmers’ markets. The most impressive one you’ll find is on the north shore of Hanalei, selling local and organic produce. Along with the mouth-watering fresh fruit and vegetables, the stunning backdrop makes the experience truly memorable.
Oahu
Known as the Gathering Place, Oahu is thriving with life, with the highest population out of all eight islands. From shark diving adventures on the north shore to sweet cocktails in the city, Oahu provides it all.
It’s here you’ll find Waikiki Beach – the Holy Grail of surfing. Once a playground for Hawaiian royalty, this stretch of beach is edged by skyscraper-high waves that bring in professional surfers from all over the world.
If you don’t want to ride the waves yourself, just lay back and watch the competition as you take in the surf skills on show and the picturesque setting.
Whether you enjoy shopping for high-trends or snorkelling at Hanauma Bay, Oahu will make your Hawaiian visit one to remember.
The Big Island
As its name suggests, the Big Island is the largest Hawaiian island by surface area. All the islands are unique, but this one really provides the ‘wow’ factor, not least for its volcanos.
Flying into Hilo International Airport, you’ll already be a short 30-minute drive away from the mesmerising Akaka Falls. Drive down HI-19 and then take in the drama on a walk alongside the falls as they plunge 130 metres into the gorge below. If you’re up for some hearty, healthy food, enjoy your breakfast at the Conscious Culture Café – famous for its buckwheat pancakes.
A Hawaiian trip also gives you the chance to seek out volcanos, and the Hawaii Volcanos Park makes for a great day out. Active wonders Kilauea and Mauna Loa are at the heart of the park, and you can often see their tips spurting fiery wonders.
Your Hawaii adventure will live long in memory. Whether you’re driving down the beautiful coastlines or up into the majestic mountains, car rental in Hawaii is the perfect way to make the most of your trip.
