With island escapes, World Heritage-listed prisons and natural wonderlands to explore, we bet you’re wondering why you haven’t explored Hobart sooner. With so much to see and do we have compiled the three must do day trips in Hobart.

Trip One: Mount Wellington

A short 20-minute drive from Hobart CBD lies Wellington Park, an 18,000-hectare natural wonderland. With over 500 native flora and fauna species inhabiting this Park, it is no surprise it holds a special place in Tasmanian’s hearts.

Once you have explored Wellington Park, drive up to the summit where Mount Wellington lies. The 21km drive is a scenic one to say the very least, passing through temperate rainforests and glacier rock formations. As you reach the top you are greeted with the most spectacular, panoramic views of Hobart, Bruny Island, the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and into the South West Wilderness.

Trip Two: Port Arthur

100km south east of Hobart sits World Heritage-listed Port Arthur. Now a top tourist attraction, this once brutal prison housed up to 2000 convicts at one time from the 1830s to 1850s. Known for its harsh discipline, gruelling work and basic food, today it is one of the best-preserved convict settlements in Australia. There are 100 acres of gardens and grounds with more than 30 buildings and ruins to explore.

Trip Three: Bruny Island

A short car-ferry ride from Kettering lies Bruny Island, a scenic, magical destination where swimming, surfing and finishing are plentiful. From scenic lookouts, bush walks and impressive local produce this 50km Island may be small, but it is a crowd pleaser.

Climb the stairs that seem dauntingly large to be greeted with 360-degree views of the island. Another worthwhile visit is Cape Queen Elizabeth track, a scenic walk that leads you though green bushland to a rocky cliff beach. It is recommended that you visit on a low tide so you can walk along the beach.

Of course, you cannot forget to visit South Bruny National Park, a place where a natural rainforest meets sea cliffs and coastline. Be sure to visit the Cape Bruny Lighthouse - the second-oldest and longest continually staffed lighthouse in Australia.
