Art By the River
Mirambeena Regional Park is home to “Cross Currents” – The Georges River Art Walk. Along with the extensive open spaces, beautifully tended bushland and playgrounds galore, they have also installed an interesting and educational art walk along the river. It commemorates Bankstown’s Aboriginal heritage, the early settlers and the various immigrations that have all combined to create the vibrancy of Bankstown. The works on display are ambitious – both in scale and in the ideas they are intended to communicate. With picnic tables and barbeques at regular intervals along the walk you can take in the sights and then stop for a picnic lunch whenever the mood strikes you.
Up, Up and Away
The Bankstown Airport is one of the area’s mostly undiscovered delights – if you have an aviation fan in your entourage you’re not going to want to miss this. Despite being Sydney’s second largest airport, it is set up to allow people to get up close and personal with all the comings and goings – there are picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy a cuppa while helicopters, planes and all manner of aircraft large and small rumble over your heads. Bushrangers at the Reservoir
You wouldn’t normally see a water tank suggested as a tourist destination, but the Bankstown Reservoir is no ordinary repository – it was built on concrete pillars in a Federation-era Romanesque revival style and is a sight to behold. It has a history as interesting as its architecture too, having previously been used as a place of execution for some notorious bushrangers. These days its grisly past is well behind it, thankfully, and it is now one of Bankstown’s many heritage sites.
Garrison Point Boating
The promontory at the junction of Georges River and Prospect Creek is home to beautiful parklands, where boating and all manner of waterborne fun takes centre stage. Rent a kayak, have a sailing lesson, drop a line in and try some fishing, or just take a dip – the choice is yours. The perfect place to cool off when the weather warms up.
