Fun at the Mill
For something quirky, kitschy and altogether delightful, pay a visit to the Cargo Mill Emporium and Heritage Centre. There’s a restored four-storey mill to explore here, and an eclectic collection of arts and crafts from local artists, who have a number of independently run stalls within the complex. There’s also a cellar door here for the winery that’s on the grounds. Add the delicious home baked treats from the bakery on site, and you have all the makings of a lovely afternoon.
BRAG in Bathurst
The Bathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) is a well-appointed and expansive building – they house a number of standing collections from significant Australian artists along with an impressive array of rotating exhibitions. They are especially well regarded for their events calendar – with lectures and discussions, “meet the artist” sessions and a whole lot more – including some very practically focussed events that are sure to be a boon if you’re an aspiring artist yourself. They also do guided tours of the gallery spaces, which can really help to put what you’re admiring into context. Clear a few hours and go soak up some culture here.
Horseback Adventure
Just outside of Bathurst, you’ll find the Yarrabin horse riding centre, which has been enchanting visitors since the 1960s. They are very well accustomed to catering to the needs of beginner riders and experienced gallopers alike, and will pair you up with the perfect equine pal for your adventure. They provide helmets and all the equipment needed, and can tailor your ride to the needs of the group, according to their age and experience level. Whether it’s a sedate stroll through the beautiful grounds or an exhilarating ride across the wide green plains, they can accommodate you here, making for a truly unforgettable experience. They have a great range of horsemanship skills courses here too, so if you’re looking to really hone your expertise in the saddle, they have the teachers to get you there.
Abercrombie Mansion
Feast your eyes on one of the grandest homes in the region – this fifty room Scottish-inspired mansion has regular guided tours. Abercrombie House also has self-guided options if you prefer to wander at your own pace, as you take in the splendour of this grand home, built in the 1870s. There’s afternoon teas held regularly here, along with jazz concerts and all kinds of interesting events, so be sure to have a look at their events calendar to see what’s happening when you’re in town. The grounds too are beautifully maintained and well worth a wander – they even have “Shakespeare in the Gardens” during the warmer months so you can take in a classic in truly beautiful surroundings.
