As the unofficial ‘boho’ capital of Australia, Byron Bay offers unique experiences at every turn. Enjoy watching the sunset on the beach as the fire twirlers practice their craft, take some time out to perfect your yoga or align your energies at one of the many local Reiki practitioners.
As well as offering plenty to do in town, Byron Bay is a short drive from some of Northern New South Wales’ most popular towns. Hop in the car and head along to some of our favourites:
- Brunswick Heads is a short 18 minute drive from Byron Bay. A little smaller (and less touristy) than its big sister, the small fishing village is quickly seeing more visitors every year. Try hiring a paddle boat or a canoe up the Brunswick Rive, or take a look at some of the local fashion and jewellery stores.
- A slightly further drive inland will take you to the township of Nimbin. A permanent shrine to the 1970s, the town has an interesting reputation due to the alternative lifestyles of many of its residents, but is well worth a visit to experience the colourful main street and the friendly locals.
- South of Byron Bay and home to the main airport that services the town, Ballina is a bustling town that continues to grow. Set on the Richmond River, it’s the perfect place for water sports or to relax by the nearby Shaws Bay.
Byron Bay is commonly known as one of Australia’s prime music festival destinations, and these festivals have become one of Byron’s top tourist attractions.
- Splendour in the Grass has taken place in Byron Bay for all but two years since its inception in 2001. The festival takes place in the winter months, and attracts acclaimed international artists. As well as music acts, you can find arts and crafts, markets and foods to suit all tastes. Splendour in the Grass offers camping, however day parking passes are available to those with cars. Visit https://www.splendourinthegrass.com/ for more information.
- Falls Music & Arts Festival, a staple for many New Year’s revellers, started a Byron Bay leg in 2013. Beyond contemporary music, the festival is known for a wide array of performances including comedy, cabaret and theatre. As with Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival offers camping, however car passes and car drop-off areas are available. Visit https://fallsfestival.com/byron-bay/ for more information.
- The oldest of the festivals, Byron Bay Bluefest has exclusively taken place in the area over Easter weekend every year since 1990. It traditionally features blues and roots performers, but has also featured more contemporary artists in recent times. Visit https://www.splendourinthegrass.com/ for more information.
Whether your visit to Byron Bay is a quick stopover or a long-lasting getaway, you’ll be able to experience the relaxed, laid-back town and stunning shorelines with ease in a rental car from Hertz.
