Cobar is a small town located in central New South Wales. Its name is derived from the Aboriginal word for copper, after the rich mining to be found in the area when it was first settled. Today, the area is still predominantly a mining town, providing a number of valuable resources including copper,zincand silver. The Cobar Heritage Walk is a great way to explore highlights of the town, and takes roughly an hour. It begins at the Heritage Centre and includes stunning architecture from the Edwardian and Victorian eras as well as accommodation used by miners in the past.
Roughly 50 kilometres west of Cobar lies the Mt Grenfell Historic Site, an important piece of Aboriginal culture displaying rock art significant to the local Ngiyampaa people. It’s a highly spiritual area surrounded by nature and is a great place to visit if you’re looking to immerse yourself in the history of the Cobar area.
The town of Cobar is itself quite small and, though it provides the necessities for a comfortable stay, the real attraction of the area is its mining culture, which you’ll need to travel further out for. The journey time is hardly wasted, though; the vast countryside offers a unique view of the outback landscape.
