The town was declared Australia’s first inland city in 1863. Since then, Goulburn has welcomed its rural roots, with the ‘Big Merino’ standing proudly above the people that live here. You’ll likely notice him as soon as you arrive: a celebration of the wool industry in Goulburn and its surrounding towns, it’s a fantastic reminder of the city’s proud history and culture. The Big Merino is one of the many ‘Big Things’ located in cities across Australia - they’re an iconic part of the culture here, so perhaps try to find as many as possible during your holidays.
Goulburn is in the cool climate wine region. This means there are some fantastic wineries to visit while you’re staying in the area, such as Bungonia Creek Wines and Kingsdale Wines. Further afield, the town of Bowral is home to many wineries - it’s about an hour’s drive from Goulburn, but features some fantastic sites like Centennial Vineyards and Artemis Wines, so perhaps head on a day trip here if you have the time. Of course, always enjoy the wineries safely, and have a designated driver on hand to take your party from place to place.

Bowral is a thriving New South Wales town. It’s located in the Southern Highlands and is home to some delicious cafes, dining options, and many wineries throughout the area. Fitzroy Falls is close to the town centre - a beautiful spot with cascading waterfalls into the canyon below.
There’s the Bungonia National Park, just a 30-minute drive away. This is the adventure capital of the Southern Tablelands, with many adventure sports to participate in here. Choose from canyoning, caving, rock climbing, abseiling, and more. Perhaps hike up the Molly O’Neill track to the Lookdown lookout and see the Bungonia Slot Canyon from above. There are many activities to do while here, so enjoy!
Sydney and Canberra are also relatively close by. Perhaps head into the city if you’re in Goulburn for a while - there’s nothing quite like a trip to a thriving and busy place after a relaxing stay in the countryside. Canberra, the capital, is a great city to discover more about the history of Australia - perhaps visit one of the many museums here while you’re in town.
