Lidcombe’s proximity to central Sydney sees it being a preferred spot for wider explorations, but some time exploring the local area is also well spent – Lidcombe’s history and leafy suburban vibe will make you fall in love.
Peaceful Rest at Rookwood
As large as the suburb itself is The Rookwood Necropolis – you wouldn’t normally consider a cemetery a hot tourist attraction, but Rookwood is different. In addition to being the oldest, largest and most multicultural working cemetery in Australia, it is a hub of history and heritage for the area and welcomes visitors. It has a café and restaurant, along with beautiful walking paths and helpful guides to point you in the right direction. More than a million people have had their final resting place here, so whether it’s famous Australians, colonial era tombstones of or the incredible architecture of the family vaults, you will find a visit here an unforgettable experience.
Make a Splash
When the mercury soars, there’s no better place to cool off then at the Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre – if the sun’s out, dive into the 50m Olympic Swimming pool, or if it’s looking grey, head indoors to the 25m pool and stay out of the weather – either way you’re in for a fun time. There’s a fully shaded interactive water play area for the little ones, and a water polo pool if you and your friends would like to have a go at an Olympic sport that’s sure to see you splashing. All the pools in the complex are heated to ensure comfortable bathing all year round, and if you’re keen to work up a sweat, there’s a gym and sauna too.
Darts or Pins?
Tenpin City, as the name suggests, is an indoor bowling boasting an impressive array of lanes with all the latest bells and whistles, but it’s much more than that. There’s a range of other activities on offer here – from a darts arena to arcade games and much more. The arcade is full of both retro classics and more modern offerings, so there’s plenty to choose from here. They’re used to darts beginners and are more than willing to give you a few pointers, so if you’ve always wanted to try it but never been sure where to start, this is your opportunity. The whole family is sure to have a great time here.
Play at Phillip Park
Phillip Park is everything a great suburban park should be – a place where people can come and get some fresh air, meet their neighbours, the kids can run, and the adults can sit and enjoy the scenery. There are nearly always kids kicking balls around here on any given afternoon, so your offspring are sure to make some new friends and have some fun here. There’s a cool playground and a great BBQ area too.
