Surf, Scenery and Much More

While Newcastle is a popular destination for surfing and the surrounding Hunter Valley region, the city centre is a road trip escape in and of itself. As one of Australia’s oldest cities, Newcastle provides history buffsthe opportunity to go on a heritage crawl to century-old sites.

When you’ve finished taking in the vintage architecture, you’ll find bars abound and diverse culinary options on every street corner. Newcastle is rich in art and culture, with numerous art galleries, theatres and museums to explore.

If you’re spending time in Newcastle, it’s well worth venturing out for a drive and exploring more of what the famed Hunter region has to offer.

  • Maitland lies 35 km northwest of Newcastle. This riverside town is filled with rich history. Visit the Maitland Gaol, or learn about the industrial history of the Walka Water Works, built in 1887 to supply water to Newcastle and its neighbouring towns.
  • The famous Hunter Valley Wine Region is Australia’s oldest wine producing region and is known for its award-winning wineries and stunning scenery. Stop off at the nearby town of Cessnock for some retail therapy, or check out Singleton, where you’ll find one of the world’s largest sundials.
  • Take a drive down south to visit the Lake Macquarie region, the home of Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake. Lake Macquarie is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor leisure time. Relax on one of the many quiet beaches, visit one of the many local water sports companies to hire a paddleboard, or take a ride on a thrilling jet boat.

For those who plan on remaining locally, Newcastle’s stunning scenery provides a backdrop for many of the areas walking tracks. Some of our favourites are listed below:

  • The Newcastle Memorial Walk along the town’s coast is a scenic walk that allows you to learn about Australia’s history and participation in World War I. Built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, the walk also acts as a memorial for the local men and women who lost their lives in war.
  • The Bathers Way Coastal Walk is a two-hour walk that starts at Nobbys Lighthouse and stretches to Glenrock Reserve. Look out for the yellow information signs that guide you along the way and tell stories of Newcastle’s convict and Indigenous heritage.
  • Blackbutt Reserve features 10 km of walking tracks designed for varying levels of fitness, and is also home to wildlife exhibits and picnic facilities.

Whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, Newcastle has something for everyone. Hire a car from Hertz during your stay and give yourself a chance to see it all.
