Loved by both domestic and international tourists alike, Port Macquarie is a holiday destination that will capture your heart.
Located on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Port Macquarie is within relatively easy distance of both Sydney to the south and Brisbane to the north. Make the most of this fantastic location and combine it with a longer coastal road trip. Or, stay awhile - there’s plenty to do, see, and discover within the town itself.
As with any regional location in Australia, you’ll be wise to have a car for your stay. Head to our Port Macquarie Downtown offices for all your rental car needs.
Discover the Beaches of Port Macquarie with Hertz
Port Macquarie is home to 17 beautiful beaches. If you’re staying in town for a few days, we recommend visiting as many as possible to truly understand the beauty of the town.
The most popular beach in the area is Town Beach. With gorgeous sand dunes and rolling waves, this beach has something for everyone. Enjoy the ocean, skate park, outdoor gym, colourfully painted rocks, and so much more on a day trip here. Lighthouse Beach is another great option; located a seven-kilometre drive outside of the main town, it’s the longest stretch of coast in the area. Head here for a lovely afternoon walk by the ocean, or perhaps a surf if you’re keen to get in the water. High above the coast is the Tacking Point Lighthouse. The 13th oldest lighthouse in Australia, it attracts thousands of visitors each year who want to learn about an important piece of history. The lighthouse also serves as the starting point of the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk, which stretches across several beautiful viewpoints and historical points of interest.
And remember to always keep an eye out to the horizon when at the beach, particularly in winter. While dolphins can be spotted all year round, the winter months are an exciting time for whale spotting. See if you can catch a glimpse of a humpback breaching or hitting its tail on the water as they swim past.
Nature-lovers should also keep looking up. Port Macquarie is a known koala habitat, so keep an eye on the trees as you journey through the town. If you’re keen to see one up close, head to the Koala Hospital or Billabong Zoo, where you’ll see koalas and other native animals too.
Discover National Parks in your Rental Car
Port Macquarie is home to Sea Acres National Park.
Drive across to get into the depths of the national park, where the rainforest awaits, or walk the Coastal Track to see a different side of nature here. Inside the park itself is a wondrous green rainforest, with deep canopies throughout. Walk the Sea Acres Rainforest boardwalk to get a closer look, and you may spot a few of the animals that live here too.
Further afield are the Bago Bluff National Park, Crowdy Bay National Park, Limeburners Creek National Park, and Kumbatine National Park. These are all idyllic escapes in their own right, so perhaps drive around to find your favourite.
